Ms. Shuhaimi Baba (Datin Paduka) is the Founder/Managing Director of Pesona Pictures Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian film and television content Production Company, operating since 1993 and its MSC status associate co., Pesona Multimedia Sdn Bhd. Shuhaimi is a prominent Writer, Producer and Film Director as well as a Lyricist. She was appointed Creative Consultant of MEASAT and ASTRO to help set up Malaysia’s first satellite television network. Responsible for introducing the digital HD technology to the local film industry in 2002, she received the Innovative Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2005.
All of Shuhaimi’s films have received recognition from the local film festivals. Internationally, her films have garnered the Best Director, Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Actor & Actress, Best Sound and Best Music awards through films such as “1957 Hati Malaya”, “Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam” (PHSM) and its sequel “PHSM 2”, ‘Waris jari Hantu’ “Layar Lara” and “Selubung”. Shuhaimi fought and overcame a 30 yr ban on local horror films with PHSM, opening the floodgates for Malaysian horror films that have continued to dominate the box-office returns.
“Layar Lara” also received recognition at home for having won the most awards. Historical film, “1957 Hati Malaya”, about Malaysia’s fight for independence, was recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records as having the highest number of screenings on a day. In 2007, at the invitation of the Royal Asiatic Society – School of Oriental Studies, University of London, she presented a talk on “Cinematic Expressions in the Struggle for Independence“.
Shuhaimi has produced and directed 10 feature films and numerous TV productions including drama, documentaries, magazine, digital contents and corporate videos. She has also produced and directed documentaries for international TV broadcast entitled “Windchucker” for the Discovery Channel(2009) and documentary feature ‘P.Ramlee’ (Malaysia’s screen legend) for the History Channel (2010). She has just wrapped up the filming of her latest movie; TANDA PUTERA (the mark of a Leader), slotted for cinematic release in 2012. Her next project is the production of ARKA, an 8-episode TV historical epic action series about brave warrior, Raja Haji and his princess ‘Puteri Hamidah’, who took on Dutch Colonial might in 17th century South East Asia.
A graduate of University Malaya, she received professional training at BBC and TV London. She obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma and Film Making from the National Film & TV School, Beaconsfield, United Kingdom in 1980-82. Her experience includes stints as a TV Producer in Malaysia’s National TV Station, Development Director at Malaysian Film Development Corporation and Head of Productions at Malaysia’s earliest private TV Station.
Conferred the title of honour “Datin Paduka” by H.R.H. the Sultan of Selangor in 2009, Shuhaimi was also recipient of the ‘National Arts Award’ for Film Directing, the highest form of Government recognition for the respective fields of Arts in the Malaysian Creative Industry.
She is currently President of the Malaysian Film Producers Association (PFM) and since 5 December 2011, has been appointed as Chairman Film & TV Sub-Committee for the Policy Implementation of The National Creative Industry Policy. The committee in specially tasked with producing a report on the future of the country’s Film & Television industry. Shuhaimi is also a member of the Film Directors Association of Malaysia (FDAM), Music Authors' Copyright Protection (MACP) and American Film Institute (AFI).
